(110,185 posts)the Dept. of Wildlife. Apparently the state is grossly understaffed for this kind of thing. I was concerned because there was a large raccoon in broad daylight stumbling around in our yard. My husband and I were worried about rabies, because it wasn't behaving normally. (We're used to raccoons around here.)
They said they couldn't do anything, but we could hire a trapper. I said that by the time a trapper came, the animal would be in someone else's yard. What was the point of that?
They said they couldn't help, even if the animal appeared to have rabies. I told them that my husband said this is the kind of thing guns are for. He didn't disagree, but pointed out that it is illegal to discharge a gun in my city.
It just wandered off. I never heard any reports of anyone being bitten. But it was very frustrating to know that they wouldn't do anything unless an animal actually attacked someone. But in your case, you WERE attacked, so that's even worse.
