I think that religions especially only change to survive. They are dogmatic institutions. People leaving in droves will force change, or the church will close, otherwise it will be a slow stagnation. The Mormon Church finally dropped racial bigotry because of this.
If the foundational beliefs of religion are not openly criticized, then the status quo and perception of bigotry based on religious beliefs somehow being more acceptable remains.
I think perhaps the most damning thing is that the pope's supposedly progressive views are based in a very regressive reasoning. The same reasoning that the pope thinks the devil is behind marriage equality is the same reasoning he thinks people should help the poor.
So even praising the pope for his progressive views is changing none of the fundamentals and supporting regressive reasoning and terrible logic.
