(4,940 posts)I haven't missed voting in any local/state/federal election since 1972. It hasn't done a bit of good over the last 15 years. I've volunteered at our shelters (teen and adult), collected food, helped with fund-raisers, but it's all run by churches and they don't much appreciate my lack of belief. My husband has held his job for 13 years; our retirement savings are nonexistent, due to medical expenses and ungodly! rents. This is heavily military area, and base housing is inadequate; the military-subsidized off-base housing allowances have driven most of us working poor to extremely substandard housing. Most of my friends, and remember we're in our 60's, live in "dry" housing - no running water, with outhouses. They don't do so by choice. In-town, on-grid rentals start at around $800 a month for a one-room efficiency, and you're lucky if there are any utilities at all included.
And I get where you're coming from when someone tells you to move somewhere cheaper! (A) WHERE? and (B) HOW????
Perhaps we will survive. Your children alone are worth it!
