A lot of it was more classist than regionalism, and there's a history of people like Abraham Lincoln and William Jennings Bryan getting sneered at for caring about poor country people.

It's probably a bit easier to deal with those insults than the vile racism thrown at our current President, but there certainly are people who got upset that somebody like Bill Clinton went from a rural working class background to the White House.
