There were calls for a boycott of the 36 Berlin games, for obvious reasons. The Committee was not supportive. They sent a representative, Avery Brudage, to Germany who reported dutifully that there was no discrimination in Germany against Jews or anyone else and concluded that the stories of oppression were bogus, a creation of a conspiracy to hurt Hilter's reputation, a conspiracy of the communists and the Jews!
So we went. The school books tell us of Jesse Owens, of whom we should be proud, but the books do not bother to mention the only two Jewish athletes on the US Team, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller, who were pulled from competition on the day of their race by Brundage.
We did not allow our Jewish athletes to compete that day. Later, there were events such as 'WW2' and 'the Holocaust' which demonstrated how wrong those who refused to boycott had been.
