(CNN) -- One student was shot Friday afternoon at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, campus police said.

Authorities put the school on lockdown as they searched off-campus for four suspects, the university information office said.

The condition and identity of the student were not immediately known.

Campus police were called to the Andrew Hugine Suites Living and Learning community about 1:30 p.m. and found the injured student, the university said. Police said eyewitnesses identified four suspects who had left the campus, the university said.
