It's just a chance for fevered egos to feel important on a weakly basis. No one cares what McCain or Ryan or a Paul have to say, but this is their chance to take the stage for dozens of viewers. It's similar to a little kid walking around with a plastic microphone, blabbing about whatever is rattling around their head at the time.
