Since your fireplace screen is on, and technically the squirrel is IN your house and being at the flue section (as in your chimney a part of the house.) animal control should be contacted again.
Where do you live (I'd like to look up the relevant laws)
If they say no, then ask for the supervisor.

I was doing the laundry and brought the basket back inthe house when a baby squirrel popped out.

i know my neighbor trained a squirrel to eat from her hand unfortunately she died before this
