(5,180 posts)what the party has become. They used to be "the party of Lincoln." Those of my generation wonder what happened to Eisenhower, who should be their last, good president. My parents were active in the Democratic party, and I know the Democrats were hoping to get Eisenhower, and turned against him when he ran as a Republican. I was a first grader at the time, but was exposed to a lot of political talk. It wasn't until I had grown up a bit, that I thought Ike was a good president. Nixon won the first presidential election in which I voted. I despised him at the time, but despite his being an obviously paranoid, screwed up individual, he was, no contest, the last Republican president who accomplished some good. His overall legacy was obviously important to him. Later Republican presidents seem to have been unabashedly champions of the one percent, and the Democratic presidents are only going through the motions in presenting themselves as anything otherwise.
