I heard a lot of Dutch as a small child because my grandmother and her sisters all spoke Dutch when they wanted to talk about some secret gossip that they did not want me to understand. They would say, "Little pitcher have big ears," and that was my cue to pay attention because they were going to talk funny and I wanted to try to understand. Years later I had a boss who was Dutch. He spoke about personal family matters in Dutch in my presence. It was OK for a while but then I felt I had to confess to him that I could understand what he said. I was as surprised as he was. What you hear as a small child sticks in your ears I think. But you don't realize that until some situation permits you to hear that it.
