2. I remember reading somewhere there was a zoo willing to take it but I could be wrong

But I really believe this was a move to try and placate animal rights activists. After all like you said if this was about animal rights they'd be taking steps to encourage people to become vegetarians and such. Or take steps to get rid of the factory farming systems that exist which are inherently cruel to the animal even if they get the courtesy of being stunned the moment before death
