(33,982 posts)Fair comparison would be the way the police of the '50's beat black people in the open, in broad daylight, as a form of punishment. That's, I think, part of why the Russia beating these protestors bothers me so much.
Yes, you can be beaten by police in the US, but they have to hide it at least, under the guise of 'stop resisting', etc. And there's a arrest record, and an affidavit by the officer, that identifies the officer, etc.
None of that is present in the Russia video. Those people were beaten like black protestors in the 50's, 60's. No fear. No bother to arrest. They beat them as punishment, which is very disturbing.
I can think of no examples like it in the US during my lifetime. Yes, it has happened, and abuses still happen, but this was a total throwback to civil rights issues 'of old' in the US.
I'm a little annoyed in the direction that my post was taken by other posters. Equivalency or 'don't throw stones' couldn't have been further from my point.
