1. there's a long history of authoritarianism on the left.

Not sure why people are surprised to see it manifest itself in the figurative blank check many have written Maduro. "The oligarchs oppose the Bolivarians, ergo any opposition to the Bolivarians is an extension of the oligarchs' agenda and any means necessary should be used to suppress that."

Same logic that causes people to conclude that none of Venezuela's problems are due to the government's policies. Not the crime, not the inflation, not the product shortages--government deserves no blame for any of those problems.
