7. We live in a rural area, so we get a lot of dumped pets.

It makes me so mad.

The most recent one was a beautiful tuxedo cat- we came around the corner just in time to see his former owner hop in his car and drive away.

We picked him up and brought him inside. Holding him in my lap, I discovered that he had been declawed. What kind of person abandons a defenseless cat???

My kids said we needed to find "one of those crazy cat ladies" to take him in. I told them that around here, we ARE the crazy cat lady.

Last year, it was a gorgeous chocolate lab. So gorgeous, we didn't realize she was homeless for quite awhile. She hung out with the neighbor's australian shepherd and was pregnant by the time we figured out she didn't belong to anyone. She had nine puppies. It took us nine months to find homes for them.

These were lucky. Many of the dogs and cats dropped off are hit by cars, or shot, or badly injured by other animals out here. We do our best to round them up and rehome them, but can't save everyone.
