(50,983 posts)33. The average American citizen has never given this much thought.
They do not understand that the greatest naval battles of all time were fought during WWII. These sorts of battles will never take place again.
There are no great navies to oppose the USA. They do not exist. And even if some other (insane) nation aspired to build themselves into a great naval power we could then react by building up our own forces.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I understand in a 14 aircraft carrier world we have 10.
