(8,646 posts)the one major thing I learned from my poli sci course (and trust me, there wasn't much I didn't know in this class, I didn't even crack open my text and I got an A+ thanks to my 10 yr obsession with DU, lol) was that the Canadian PM (I'm in Canada) has far, far more domestic power than does the US President. In a majority situation, there isn't much that can stop the PM, whereas the President can be completely stonewalled his entire presidency. Having said that, the President does have a 'final say' that the Canadian PM doesn't have - the veto - which means that even though he may be stonewalled - he can also do the same. Hence why the US has issues getting things done versus other countries with parliamentary systems - lots of checks and balances that slow down the process. Not always a bad thing, but it does slow things down.
I do think Obama is trying, but I'm not sure he's going about it the right way. I don't like the corporatism, specifically with the big Ag appointments. I think there is a lot of room for improvement that IS within his power. Oh, and I do like Garth Brooks, and I did like his music back in the day.
'We shall be free' has already been posted. Love that one.
