What most people don't know is that for several years the driving force in web site creation was "adult entertainment". Much of what you see today, and a lot of programmer types, got a real boost from that. The owners of the businesses were willing to invest money to innovate, while others in business were still waiting to be convinced. A lot of the animation and video people see today borrowed from their experience.
