I doubt they care about Ukrainians but "historical ties" and "sphere of influence" arguments are the same for Russia in Ukraine and China in Tibet and one day in Taiwan.
China has traditionally been a super advocate of national sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. Partly they may have really believed it and partly because they did not want anyone interfering in their affairs so it seemed like a great doctrine to support when they weren't as strong as they are now.
Now China seems to see the wisdom of scaling back a little on the whole "non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries". Why? I think they see self-interest in this new perspective.
