The former Soviet Union was atheist and anti christianity. The CIA fact book states that as of 2006 Russia was 2% christian and 15 to 20% Russian orthodox. As far as authoritarianism goes you've obviously never been in Russia because since they embraced capitalism there are no rules. Everyone just does as they please. Hence the reason it's such a crazy place.
