But that sort of oversimplifies the issue. One doesn't need to be a paranoid freak to be unfit for the responsibility of being a cop. I think that many ordinary, reasonable people would, if put in the same situation, would have perceived the man to be reaching for a gun and reacted the way the cop did. The problem is that cops aren't regular, ordinary people. They have a responsibility for more than their own life. When they believe they might be seconds away from being shot, they need to be restrained and level-headed enough to take an extra second to make absolutely sure.

This cop failed to uphold that duty. It doesn't make him a thrill killer, or even a bad person necessarily, but it does call into question whether he should be in this line of work.
