(9,823 posts)phones and they completely blot out everything and everyone else around them. Years ago, I remember having long conversations with people in grocery stores, in doctor/dentist waiting rooms, on planes or other public transportation. Now, everyone under a certain age is glued to their little devices and I feel like a fish out of water for not being hooked up to one. I think this has done more to destroy the feeling of community than anything else.
I know people who will hardly talk to anyone on the phone--they interact solely by text msg. Even long time friends will just send a message rather than actually talking to someone. Frankly, I like the hear the sound of a loved one's voice. My parents are deceased now, but when they were alive, I would call them sometimes just to hear the sound of their voice, even when I didn't have much to talk about with them.
