when human kind was still evolving into what we have become now, fear of the outsider was a survival trait. The band/tribe depended on each other for survival in a very intimate way. Even members of the tribe who were too "different" were quite literally threats to the cohesion, and therefore the survival of the tribe. Those who were "different" had to be cast out.

Uniformity, conformity, predictability, these were vital necessities and deviations HAD to be swiftly put down for the sake of simple survival. Xenophobia has been bred into us for tens of thousands of generations in an environment where a lack of xenophobia could mean certain death at the hands of "the other".

The very traits that we evolved in order to survive in raw competition with other life forms and other cultures are the very traits that betray us today, threatening our survival as a species. It's unlikely that human nature will change quickly enough to do any good. Yet another reason why the human race is a flawed species, doomed, like all species before it, to eventual extinction.

It won't be us that outgrows bigotry. It will be whatever species replaces us a million years from now.
