(3,366 posts)and he said, "Congratulations! Now you just have to fight the cravings for the rest. of. your. life." I left his office, stopped at a convenience store, and bought some cigarettes. It was another 20 years before I quit again. (I do NOT have cravings any more, so he was WRONG.)
I told another doctor that if I was craving something sweet, I was having a half-cup peaches in lite syrup, and she said, "Oh canned fruits are so high in sugar. They are not really good for you." Never mind that I was choosing the peaches over half a bag of cookies. She made it sound like such a poor choice that I might as well forget it. And I did. And gained another 10 lbs.
So, you know, all these well-meaning dire warnings how a step in the right direction is not really good... all this concern that "yeah you're trying to make a healthier choice, BUT..." do you KNOW how discouraging that is to someone who is struggling to do better?
I swear, I think doctors WANT you to fail... or they just NEED to point out that no matter what a positive thing you've done, it doesn't matter because you could do better.
