If you're just getting started I'd recommend what boston bean just said above- one of the eGo batteries, which are fairly inexpensive, and either the Kanger Evod or ProTank, or the iClear30. Kanger tanks have a leakage problem if they're not kept filled above half, but they deliver a good hit and the ProTanks are durable little things.
A lot of vape shops now have tester bars for their flavors, poke around a few shops and test a few brands out.
Disposables are garbage, their main selling point is that they look a little like an analog smoke to people who are just starting the transition. They taste awful and as you noted, the draw always sucks.
