(23,156 posts)It's my vague impression that at any time the actual workforce is about half of the total population. I have no idea where I got that idea from, but it's stuck in my brain.
I know that the population pyramid makes a different. If a huge number are under 16 or over 65, it's quite different from a more even pyramid, where each age group is similar in size.
While these days the presumption is that all able-bodied adults are of course in the workforce, it becomes important to note how many are not able-bodied, or how many are women at home with young children. That of course would have been a much greater percentage fifty plus years ago, but again I vaguely think that a noticeable percentage of moms with young children are not in the workforce.
