The right wing will come out to defend him about the homosexuality issue come hell or high water.

I think it becomes harder for them to defend him on a statement that shows utter ignorance about what was going on in the south at that time. Even if he claims he never heard his neighbors complain about their lot in life there's no way he was ignorant about what was going on in his general neck of the woods and why his neighbors may possibly be inclined to keep their opinions to themselves.
