71. Michigan Is A Real Basket Case

Mar 2014

Same sex married couples must file federal tax returns using the options available to straight married couples. For Michigan residents they must prepare a second set of federal return where they each file as single and then file Michigan income tax based on the non-used federal return, which likely means higher taxes. What a piece of work Michigan has become. Yes, this was put in place after DOMA was ruled unconstitutional but I don't see how a Michigan resident that is married out of State is any different than those married in Michigan. They file federal as a married couple and file Michigan as single. Not sure how this isn't in violation of the 14th Amendment.
