I've been saying this for a while. The Republican requirement of Christian faith is inconsistent with general Republican philosophy. Thus, to be a Republican politician means you have to pretend to be a Christian - at least to get elected, anyway. That necessarily builds hypocrisy into the model. They are attracting the bottom of the barrel - candidates who are willing to lie about their religious faith. Only people with a very small sense of decency can do that effectively.
