I'm especially leery of magazine subscriptions since reading an article years ago about how the kids enlisted for this are picked up from inner-city areas, driven to the suburbs, and sent off to collect subscriptions. Ever wonder why, when you try to offer the kids a little cash instead of taking out a subscription, they're still insistent on you doing the magazine instead? Because if they don't bring back their quota, the bastard who drove 'em out to the suburb won't pay 'em, and won't drive 'em home.

I knew someone who did that for a very short time, and that's exactly what happened.

Also, like you, I also make it a point never to buy anything from a solicitor. One time a kid came around to the apartment complex I lived in, selling some shit and sort of barged his way in when I opened the door. He gave his spiel and I told him that I never buy from people who call or come to my door, and if I want something I go to the store and get it. He told me I was wrong (wrong!!!) to do that. I got more and more annoyed with him and ended up telling him to leave or I'd call the police.
