In reply to the discussion: Eugene Robinson: "It’s all over but the shouting: Obamacare is working." [View all]freshwest
(53,661 posts)19. Thanks, ProSense. Anecdotally, people here seem to be spending a lot more for medical, but it's not
from higher rates. They are paying more because they are signing up for better coverage than they had before. There is true competition now, and the ball is in the buyer's corner, not the seller with the sharecropper plans with all control in the hands of the powerful half of the contract, not the worker.
They are getting more services for less, and many have not been getting the level of care now afforded them, and getting more health issues taken care of and faster than before.
There is an increase of people going to the doctors, because they are able to afford it, and the volume is taking care of the providers as well. People are feeling more freedom to get care and improve their health which benefits all of us as they become more able to stay independent, take care of family members or work. More are healthy enough to do volunteer work that they were unable to do before.
The primary legacy of the ACA that strikes at the for profit model is that there are no denials for pre existing conditions. This is a game changer that is not being credited. People are now expecting more than they ever did, and getting it. This is going to become second nature now, the recognition that illness is not a moral defect or something to be punished by high rates. I think people should look at what they are being offered, and make use of it.
