He was one of the first black players to make it into the big leagues, and played opposite Jackie Robinson. There was a fair amount of bigotry back then, and unfortunately the darker aspects of human nature do not change that much. And vehement hatred is often the fallback when being called out for projecting the impact of one's failings onto another.
