(854 posts)Absinthe began to have serious negative cultural and health effects because of two things: 1) the generally toxic nature of alcohol and its use in very high levels in absinthe and 2) the common use of really nasty, unregulated and inferior industrial spirits as a base after phylloxera destroyed the French grape harvest in the 1880s. These two factors came together and helped fuel a rise in alcoholism and violence that horrified people and helped lead to absinthe's prohibition. Absinthe really did drive people mad and melt their brains, it just was the cheap industrial alcohol base that was the cause and not the wormwood.
Absinthe prohibitionists were not entirely unjustified in their claims, they just got the cause wrong. Cannabis prohibitionists, on the other hand, are liars, morons and fear mongers and should all be loaded into a giant slingshot and fired directly into the heart of the sun, never to stain our nation and history again with their mendacity and deception.
