McConnell: Jobs comment taken out of context

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell says his comments that it is not his job to bring employment to a struggling Kentucky county were taken out of context.

McConnell said Thursday in a statement that he wanted to clarify the “not my job” remarks, published in the Beattyville Enterprise newspaper about Lee County, where the unemployment rate is 12.8 percent. The paper quoted McConnell saying it was up to the state government to create jobs.

In his statement, McConnell says all government officials should work to create jobs, pointing out a bill he sponsored last year that would lower federal taxes for areas that have high unemployment.

Democratic Senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes called McConnell’s comments reprehensible. She says her first priority would be to create jobs.
