the ASPCA, Humane Society and local rescues. There are hundreds of local rescues in my area who take in thousands of animals from local shelters. The people that run and volunteer at these rescues are saints.

It is important to also support you local rescues - a lot of them struggle to supply food, medicine, etc for the animals they have saved.
