They're in the process of getting reverse feeds from Slovakia and Poland which they may not pay for either.

Slovakia reaches reverse gas flow deal with Ukraine.

PRAGUE, April 26 (Reuters) - Slovakia and Ukraine have reached an agreement on opening up limited reverse flow of natural gas from central Europe to Ukraine and will sign the deal on Monday, the Slovak Economy Ministry said on Saturday.

Ukraine is trying to secure alternative supplies to those from Russia's Gazprom since Russia annexed Crimea last month and Gazprom raised prices for its gas to levels Ukraine is refusing to pay.

Under the deal, Slovakia will make technical adjustments to an old unused pipeline so it can ship over 3 billion cubic metres of gas a year from around October, rising to up to 10 bcm from next spring.

Ukraine has been pushing for another technical solution allowing larger volumes it needs, but Slovakia is refusing that because it fears it would violate its contracts with Gazprom.

Poland’s reverse supplies of gas to Ukraine currently limited to 1.5 billion cubic meters

WARSAW, April 16. /ITAR-TASS/. Reverse supplies of natural gas from Poland to Ukraine stand at 4 million cubic meters a day at present, Malgorzata Polkowska, the press secretary of Gaz System company told ITAR-TASS Wednesday.

“Gaz System, the Polish operator of main and distribution pipelines, delivers some 4 million cubic meters of gas from Poland a day,” she said.

Thus reverse supplies of natural gas to Poland do not exceed 1.5 billion cubic meters per year for the time being.

She said that gas would be delivered to Ukraine in the second quarter of the year on the basis of daily requests, as regular supplies could be made on the basis on the basis of a bidding contest that was held March 3 and March 17 without any bids made.

“The current supplies are effectuated on the basis of 24-hour requests that should be made every day before 14:00 on the date preceding the delivery,” Malgorzata Polkowska said.

At least for the time being the subject of fracking is a red herring. They may be in the same boat as Poland - deposits too deep whatever.

Total drops shale gas exploration in Poland.

Warsaw - French oil giant Total has abandoned efforts to explore for shale gas in Poland, the country's environment ministry said on Monday, amid controversy over the energy source in Europe.

"Their exploration licence expired on 1 April and Total has not requested a renewal," ministry spokesperson Pawel Mikusek told AFP, without giving a reason for the decision.

He said it was Total's only licence in Poland, for a field in the east of the country.

Local and global companies have thus far sunk about 50 exploratory wells in Poland, but several big-name energy companies have since abandoned the work.

Global energy giants ExxonMobil and Marathon Oil dropped their exploration efforts last year after finding deposits too deep to extract using fracking.

But others including US energy majors Chevron and ConocoPhillips - which was the first to extract shale gas in Poland last year - remain in the game.

Not sure why they say " alternative supplies to those from Russia's Gazprom " - Poland and Slovakia get their's from Gazprom having transited Ukraine to get to those countries.
