He has very carefully not run as anything but a Democratic Socialist or an indie.

It would have made his life a lot easier if he did not have to fight both the Democrats and the Republicans when he ran in Vermont. They even joined forces once and agreed on a single candidate between them. Bernie beat that candidate, too.

Now, I understand he and the Democrats made a deal: Democrats will not run anyone against him in Vermont, if Bernie will vote with the Democratic Senate Caucus on procedural matters. The deal does not affect his vote on substance.
