(15,882 posts)about 40% of the population in 1960 to 15% for about the past 10 or so years, a number we appear to have plateaued at. That last 15% are very likely the harder core addicts, the hardest ones to move.
And that's why the New England Journal of Medicine wrote that in the circumstance where smokers have tried multiple times to quit without success (which describes tens of millions of people for whom patches, gum, etc don't work) suggest that the physician make the patient aware of vaping and the benefit to that safer substitute.
You are doing exactly the right thing. You mentioned money, but don't let that dissuade you. Most people who try these try several devices before they settle on what they like, and that is very likely to be more than one device. With a battery and atomizer top at less than $50US, and 2-3 bottles of fluid at $10 to $20 each you might still only be out $100 for the month, vs 300, and even less the next, but most people want or need to try other things. Still, if you had been spending $300 a month for cigarettes, that leaves a lot of room for experimentation, and it will be cheaper.
fyi - I started with e-cigs and they didn't do much, and the vaping pipe didn't either. Found a little shop whose mission is to get people off tobacco cigs, and they sold me 36/mg ml nicotine e-juice - a light tobacco flavor, as I recall.
Once I had that I set my cigs down and forgot them. Had not been without them in 42 years and I realized I had not put them in my pocket for 3 days. And that was because they got the nicotine concentration high enough to overcome what I was doing.
Now I am down in the 8-12-16 range, and will probably go to 0 with just some vegetable glycerine, water, and scent at some point, just 'cause I enjoy it.
If you have questions, there are lot of people here, and there is a site at http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ with a lot of helpful info.
