11. I once worked in Abu Dhabi for two and a half years (89-91)- On one level it seems very modern

and relatively liberal and even permissive. You will find all night discotheques, English pubs, ultra-modern hotel resorts and even churches and temples. But things like this really do come up. I suppose when I keep in mind that it in 1972 they still had a slave market and less than twenty years before that warring tribes were having raids to steal cattle and women - one is reminded how close they are to an archaic past.
