4. Color does matter

I am a very light skinned black women who could pass for white and married to a white man. I have worked in a mostly white dominated jobs. I know if I was dark skinned I would not be as accepted. I have been around racist people who make awful comments about black people. They didn't know what I was because I don't talk " black ". But one time a guy found out I was black and asked me how it was growing up in the projects? Because he had a stereotype that all black people lived on welfare and live in public housing projects ( my Dad worked for the housing authority as a manager for several years, it was drummed into that i had to work hard, get an education and never end of living there). I told him my parents both worked and they saved and brought their house in San Francisco in 1955. Both my parents went to college and sent my sister and I to catholic schools for the whole 12 years and I attended college and my parents and i ( i worked pt jobs all those 4 years) paid for it. I never used affirmative action it was on my own merits. I have always checked the box decline to state.

But this jerk insulted me with his "white priviledge".
