My grandsons call it 'torturing them with arithmetic' when I make them solve multiplication problems in their heads, without calculators or pencil and paper. What I try and get across to them by it is factoring, so they can break a large problem down into smaller pieces. I suppose this 'number line' thing is aimed at the same ability to make small ones out of big ones, but it certainly does not leap off the page as something useful....
