In reply to the discussion: Maybe we need a DU "white persons' group". [View all]jtuck004
(15,882 posts)Just look at the discussions about white privilege. For example:
"1. I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.
2. I can avoid spending time with people whom I was trained to mistrust and who have learned to mistrust my kind or me.
3. If I should need to move, I can be pretty sure of renting or purchasing housing in an area which I can afford and in which I would want to live.
4. I can be pretty sure that my neighbors in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me.
5. I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed.
...
"
Notice how that is ALL about the white person, and many are the same. Not about the black kid who is arrested for the same behavior as the white kid who gets mostly nothing, not about the black folk who are preyed on with a higher interest rate while the President appoints people who see no need to investigate, while black people are assumed to be perpetrators and shot for things that white people do all the time...
Yet when it is discussed here, as above, it is almost always from the "I" viewpoint, from the eyes and about the feelings of the white person, never about the two-faced lie they live in not getting completely enraged as they would be if the same things happened to their family or children.
One may not like it, but it is so. Perhaps we need a completely different solution that doesn't focus, like most of our lives, on white people.
