(5,861 posts)Usually they don't just jump into a fight like that. They almost always prefer aggressive posturing, which includes arching their backs to look bigger and hissing. They do this to see if they can scare the threat away without getting into a fight. That way they can minimize injury to themselves and perhaps avoid a fight they can not win with a larger animal. Only then, if it does not work, do they decide if they want to fight or run.
But you can see this cat had no time for any of that and just jumped right in, probably because she understood that the boy was being hurt and time was of the essence. I have not seen that behavior before either, and it is truly courageous when you compare it to how cats normally react to a threat.
It is interesting how different animals have different personalities, even within their own species. Instinct plays a big role but they still have individual psychology.
You can see the spray from a water hose, as the mom drops it, so she must have been watering plants nearby.
