On Thursday, televangelist Pat Robertson counseled a 700 Club viewer that the most Christian way for her to behave toward a lesbian in her family is to refuse to be her niece’s “enabler,” and to refuse to give her blessing to her niece’s relationships because they are un-Christian. “My niece just graduated from a Catholic university and has now come out as a homosexual,” wrote a viewer named Carol. “How should I, as a Christian, respond to the situation if and when I meet her partner at family functions and at holidays?”
“Well,” said Robertson, “the last thing you want to be is judgmental and at the same time you want to be loving and warm and let them know that you love them, but you cannot accept it.” “You cannot be an enabler,” he continued. “If they’re living together as a homosexual [sic] and you’re a Christian, you cannot say, ‘I accept this lifestyle.’”
“Do we accept adultery?” he asked. “Do we accept fornication? Do we accept immorality? I don’t think we ought to be accepting of it.”
“You need to always have love,” he said. “You know, there are some homosexuals who have an enormous capacity for artistic expression.
