Troy rejects transit center project

After a decade of planning, a regional transit center is off the table after City Council voted Monday not to move forward with the project.

Supporters say the project will keep the city competitive and attract and keep businesses and younger families. But opponents, including newly elected Mayor Janice Daniels and two new council members, want Troy to scrap the project, arguing it's unnecessary and may be costly to run and maintain.

Daniels was elected last month on a tea party platform and opposed a controversial library millage approved by voters in August. She doesn't want the transit project because she doesn't think the city should accept the federal government's "debt money."

Michael Hutson, chairman of city's Planning Commission, said the commission unanimously passed a resolution last week approving the transit center and urged the City Council to support it as well.
