(10,857 posts)I feel like a truly progressive candidate might have a chance to shift the Democratic Party in that direction during the primary process, something it desperately needs.
It's a 'careful what you wish for' sort of wish, to be sure, for ultraconservatives got that wish in the form of the Tea Party, and they're this close to taking down the GOP for a decade or even forever. I don't know if such a thing could even happen to the Democratic Party, but I sure as hell don't want to find out the hard way, either!
Furthermore, with outside interests able to turn almost any primary into a race-to-the-bottom, possibly beyond the control of the candidates, a serious primary race might quickly devolve into damaging mudslinging between the backers of the two candidates, which would be... unpleasant for us all.
