(118,237 posts)I held politically naive views for decades, but I started paying some attention to politics before I got out of elementary school
Greenwald's views in his late 40s are so politically immature I can only compare them to the idiotic views my friends and I held in high school
What was he doing in his adolescence? I remember lots of political turmoil in the Reagan era: apartheid became an international issue; Reagan's wars in Central America were a hot topic; many folk paid attention to Stars Wars and the effort to stop nuclear testing ...
The Wikipedia page indicates he ran unsuccessfully for city council in the mid-1980s and then enrolled in George Washington University. I don't see how the fuck he could have drifted through DC in that era and retained "a basic trust in the American political system and its institutions" or thought that the political issues of the day were just partisan squabbles between Republicans and Democrats. Iran-Contra was big news when he was in college. It involved drug-dealing, and US arms shipments to Iran, and an illegal war run from the White House basement. All the abuses under GWB had precedents under RR and GHWB: hell, part of the initial concern about GWB was that he brought lots of ugly people with ugly pasts back to DC -- folk like Elliott Abrams and John Negroponte and Otto Reich. Greenwald didn't notice anything in the 2000 elections that gave him pause?
