They seemed (based on his account, anyway) mostly curious if he was feeling suicidal.

It could be that nobody every took their concerns to the level of "will he hurt others?" because his woe-is-me attitude made him seem more at risk of harming himself.

From that angle, perhaps that made it easier for him to convince the police to go away.
