(57,936 posts)There should already have been a thorough investigation. I, for one, want to keep discussing this story until the authorities definitively give Trayvon Martin's parents an explanation about what happened to their son that at least makes sense. I think a lot of DUers feel that way, and that is why we keep pointing to discrepancies in and questions we have about Zimmerman's story.
One thing appears to be certain: Trayvon Martin was killed on a path leading behind and between the townhouses in the development, not on a street.
There were no cars on or close to that path. Cars had to be parked somewhere on the street, toward the front of the townhouses. That means that the altercation between Trayvon and Zimmerman took place some distance from Zimmerman's truck. So Zimmerman got out and left his truck to follow Trayvon or to find Trayvon on the path. That is the only way that they could have met.
Therefore, it is most likely that the encounter was initiated by Zimmerman after Zimmerman was told by the 911 operator that the 911 center did not want Zimmerman to follow Trayvon.
We also know from Zimmerman's call to 911 that Zimmerman was concerned that Trayvon would get away. This supports the conclusion that Zimmerman had a motive to follow or try to meet up with or possibly meet or confront Trayvon on the path.
Zimmerman's statements or at least the police reports on them do not make sense in a number of other respects.
I think there is probable cause to try Zimmerman. He deserves a fair trial. I hope the judge will be careful in deciding what evidence should and should not be admitted and that the jury can decide the case only on that evidence. The normal jury instruction, I believe, is that facts learned outside the courtroom are not to be considered.
We could find ultimately that the facts are very different from those that we now know. But if the facts we now know are correct, it seems to me that injustice was done when Zimmerman was not charged. Seems to me that charges and a trial based on all the admissible evidence are appropriate.
