To get into the pool, you take the online test and then if you have a high enough score, they invite you to a try out where you take another test in person and then play a practice round. There is an interview and then if you qualify, you go into the pool from which they select contestants.

According to my son, the tryout was nerd/geek central with a group of potential contestants having a serious debate as to which Doctor was their favorite Doctor from the BBC series.

Three of my son's quiz bowl team mates have already been on Jeopardy with one classmate winning twice before bombing out on the third day. The other two classmates lost on their first day but two of them were just out of college when they qualified. This is the third time my son has qualified if you count the high school tournament.
