Rightwing political violence was endemic in Birmingham then. King went to jail on 12 April 1963 knowing that Bull Connor had just been re-elected, knowing that violence was a real threat in jail, and knowing that bail money might not be available

The Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was dynamited shortly before Sunday services on 15 September 1963, killing four children
